Alaskan malamute puppies are still sometime used for sled dogs, hauling freight or heavier objects, and even personal travel. The more typical use is for sledding, canicross, bikejoring, or mushing. However, these activities are more unique cases, and the malamute today is more widely used as a house pet or show dog. The alaskan malamute was used in sledding, but with it's size, it is slower than somemost smaller and faster breeds.
The alaskan malamute puppy holds very true to it's breed and can be somewhat stubborn when it comes to many commands. If you want a dog to listen to every command you give, it might be better to look for a more compliant breed. This breed of dog has a long history of living in harsh and cold climates, and because of this keeps that behavior of survival of the fittest. It's more normal traits are for indpendence, resourcefullness, and primitive instincts. If you do make training somewhat fun for the malamute, you can be somewhat successful in teaching.
One of the more favorable qualities of the alaskan malamute puppy is it's fond of people, making them a great family dog. They are very nimble around furniture and smaller items, which helps them make ideal house dogs. With enough exercise on a daily basis, malamutes can make excellent house dogs.
